Michael David Weislow

Celebration of Life memorial services for Michael David Weislow, 67, of Rantoul, will be held Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm, Champaign. Rabbi Norman Klein will officiate.

Mr. Weislow died at 12:45 p.m., Monday, May 12, 2008, at Helia Healthcare, Champaign.

He was born February 3, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey, a son of Harry Abraham and Cecelia (Finn) Weislow. The family resided in Irvington, New Jersey, where Mr. Weislow graduated from Irvington High School in 1958.

He enrolled at Glassboro State College, where he was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. He received a bachelor’s degree in education and taught in the Irvington and Hillside, New Jersey public school systems from 1963 to 1964.

Mr. Weislow enlisted in the Air Force in January, 1964, and did his basic military training at Lackland Air Force Station, Texas. He was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming from 1964 to 1966 and then was stationed in Udorn, Thailand from 1966 to 1967.

He returned to the States and Plattsburgh AFB from 1967 to 1970. He was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, DC from 1970 to 1973. His next assignment was at Camp New Amsterdam, Holland from 1973 to 1975 and then to Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Alabama from 1975 to 1980.

He retired from a 20-year military career after his last assignment at Chanute AFB, Rantoul, from 1980 to 1984.

He worked several food service jobs after his military retirement to keep active.

Mr. Weislow is survived by a daughter, Victoria Osborn, of Champaign; a son, Neil Weislow; one brother, Ira Weislow, of Taipei, Taiwan; and a sister, Lita Katz, of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Daughter Victoria fondly recalls the following about her Dad: Dad enjoyed reading, baseball, walking and basically “living.” He was an honest man who worked hard all of his life. Dad’s values were outstanding. He never drank alcohol except for ceremonial wine, never smoked, never used curse words no matter how frustrated I could make him. He was a great dad and his military career allowed him to show his family places some of us never get to see. When we were in Holland, I was fortunate enough to experience the outside café’s, the street musicians, the open markets. There was Maduridam, a miniature city that was powered by miniature windmills, there was ice skating on the canal, visiting the bunkers and world war sites, so many things.

When stationed in Washington D.C., dad walked the stairs of the Washington Monument with Neil and me because I did not want to take the elevator. We went regularly to the Smithsonian Museum and to all of the memorials all over Washington. Dad took us to the Capital building, Pentagon; we were always seeing and doing.

I just wanted everyone to know dad was a dedicated military man, dedicated family man, a really good person and a great dad!
