Agnes L. Carpenter
Agnes L. Carpenter, formerly of Girard, Kansas, died October 22, 2011, in Mahomet, Illinois at the age of 91.
She was born on April 11, 1920 in Springfield, Colorado, to John Jackson and Myrtle Darnell Jackson. The family moved to Cherryvale, Kansas in 1934. She attended Cherryvale schools and graduated in 1938. She recieved a BS in Education from Pittsburg State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University.
She married Richard A. Carpenter on May 29, 1943 in Quaitico, Virginia. He preceded her in death in May, 1983.
She was proud to be a teacher. She taught for 27 years in Missouri, Kansas and Texas where she and her husband lived for 16 years. She was active in the Girard Methodist Church and was involved as a Sunday School teacher and Youth Group sponsor before moving to Texas in 1967. When she returned to Girard in 1982, she was active in the United Methodist women's organization. She was also a member of Eastern Star and a proud member of Chapter BG PEO in Girard for many years.
She was a china painter and spent many enjoyable hours painting. She enjoyed giving painting classes and traveling to china painting club events with friends. She liked that other people saw beauty in her art, and she liked giving special pieces to family and friends.
Agnes was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judith Ann; three sisters, Viola Miller, Iliah Jackson and Ruby Baldridge, and her parents.
She is survived by one son, Mike Carpenter, of Girard; two daughters, Pam Jones, of Eloy, Arizona, and Janet Skaggs of Mahomet; and one sister, Edna Nation of Albuquerque, NM. She has four grandchildren, Shane Standifer of Mahomet, Loree McCary of Nacgadoches, Texas, Karen Reyes of Pfluggerville,
Texas, and Paul Zinn of Ft. Worth, Texas; and 7 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Friday, Oct. 28, at the Girard United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 9:30. Pastor Steve Cole will officiate.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at The Glenwood, 1709 S. Division Street, Mahomet, at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011.
