Norman Waldo Hassler
Celebration of Life Memorial Services for Norman Waldo Hassler, 90, of Savoy, formerly of Champaign, will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, in the Savoy Room at Windsor of Savoy, 401 Burwash Ave., Savoy. The Rev. Dr. Randy Gauger will officiate.
Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm, Champaign, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mr. Hassler passed away at 3:35 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2011, at the Champaign-Urbana Regional Rehab Center in Savoy.
He was born March 1, 1921, in Belleville, Ill., the son of Waldo John and Lillian M. (Simpson) Hassler. He married Nelda M. Clayton on June 13, 1943, in Blue Mound, Ill. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Sheila Jane Ray, of Huntsville, Ala.; two sons, John Michael (Mike) Hassler, of Oconomowoc, Wis., and Kerry W. Hassler, of Louisville, Colo; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hassler was employed in the grocery business as a manager and supervisor, having worked for the Piggly-Wiggly, Eisner and Jewel food stores. In 1958 he and his family moved from Decatur to Champaign. After his retirement, he continued working as a gatekeeper for the U of I Assembly Hall.
In 1943, Mr. Hassler was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from Milliken University in Decatur, majoring in English and history.
He was a member of First Baptist Church at Savoy and the University Club. His hobbies included bowling and bridge. He was an avid Cubs fan.
