Margaret M. Thompson, PhD

Margaret M. Thompson, PhD died May 4, 2011, in her home with her partner of thompson41 years, Barbara Mann, at her side. Born in Vienna, Virginia in 1921 to Leslie and Madeline Thompson, Margaret was preceded in death by her two brothers.

Her nephew, C. Daniel Thompson and niece, Sandra Gassner gave her belief in tomorrow as she followed their accomplishments with pride and joy. Her students and grad students, especially Beverly M. Stevens, also gave her faith in the future.

A Professor emerita, U of Illinois Department of Kinesiology, she earned her doctorate at the University of Iowa double degree in music and physical education at Mary Washington and masters at George Washington. Her career led her to be a pioneer in the research of elementary aged children using physical movement in social and cognitive development.

Margaret held positions at the University of Florida, Purdue and the University of Missouri. She spent several semesters at the University of Rio Claro in Brazil developing a graduate program with Dr. Ana Pellegrini. Dr. Thompson belonged to many professional and humane organizations.

Margaret traveled wherever and whenever possible. Hobbies included playing bridge and pinochle, reading, playing a mean harmonica, collecting first day covers and enjoying an ever-widening circle of friends through her Unitarian Church. In the past, Margaret was active in the Champaign County Democratic party but always found time for golf and the wonders of the Lake of the Woods Park, fishing, cross-country skiing and tennis. She could wield a hammer and saw as well as mix a batch of cement or set furring strips and panel a room. Nothing seemed impossible for her to accomplish. Her home was her haven and watching the great variety of birds became a pastime as she aged gracefully. She will be remembered and held in the hearts of her loved ones.
